Do you live in a dead web area?
Millions of us in the UK now use mobile internet, whether it be 3G or a third generation service we like to have access to the internet at all times. Some people in certain areas of the country may find this increasingly difficult though, if a new report by Ofcom is to be believed. The report details the ‘dead web areas’ which can be found all over the country, the areas worst affected are rural areas as well as areas of Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and closer to home, areas in the north of England and east Anglia. What is a dead web area you may ask?, well it is as straight forward as it sounds, it is an area in which access to wireless internet is very difficult to obtain, if not impossible in some cases.
Ofcom state there are a number of reasons why we have dead web areas. Firstly in some areas there are just simply not enough phone masts or transmitters, this is very common in rural areas as much of the landscape is often protected and phone company’s don’t have the permission to build there. Another huge factor contributing to dead web areas is the lay of the land, places with large hills and uneven ground can often be dead web areas as the signal gets interrupted by the hills. Ofcom said the graphics provide a “snapshot” view of coverage across the UK on Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile and 3 mobile networks with shaded areas indicating where customers have the possibility of making and receiving a call outside over a 3G network. Ofcom also revealed consumers are increasingly giving up landlines in favour of their mobile phones and setting out plans to push for improved coverage as so many people now rely on it.
Ofcom closed the report by saying
“Mobile services have become central for UK citizens and consumers and for businesses.”
“We have therefore decided that now is the right time to look into coverage issues in more detail.”
This is positive news for those people located in the dead web areas, how soon these changes, if any, happen though is another question. Phone-deals.net will keep you posted on any further plans from Ofcom.
