The Sizes of Mobile Phones
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 10 years, I am sure you will agree that mobile phones and mobile technology in general has come a long, long way. Around 10 years back, when mobile phones first started gaining mainsteam popularity, they handset technology was extremely limited. I mean sure, the basic features were there but when it comes to storage capabilities and cameras, it was none existent. As each year went by, phones seemed to get smaller and smaller. I remember purchasing a Samsung around 5 years back that I had trouble holding due to how small it was. These tiny handsets were jam packed with features such as MP3 players and high resolution cameras and were only a few inches in size.
People used to discuss often how small mobile phones will get in a further 5 years and so on. Fast forward to today and the most popular phones on the market such as the Apple iPhone are big and getting bigger! Whether this is due to the technology within the phones themselves and the inability to place such technology in a smaller handset or the fact that the market has learned that people prefer a normal sized handset has yet to be decided. Personally, I feel that handsets such as the aforementioned Apple iPhone are just the right size and anything smaller is just a gimmick, however I can’t help think that the iPhone and its competitors from other manufacturers will only end up getting smaller and smaller and the next round of mobile technology will then appear in a larger handset and so on. Phones can only get so small before new technology warrants a larger handset. I think it’ll be an on going cycle.
